Dear Readers, While reading through a small selection of books submitted before sending them to be judged, I was impressed by the small distinctions between what may be a finalist and which titles might be determined winners. Every book, I found, merited acclaim for the passion of its story. Beyond that, I was grateful for the discernment and experience of our reading judges who will make the fine line distinctions that will determine our 2015 best in books recipients. That said, I am overjoyed to announce our 2015 Wheatley Legacy Award recipients: award-winning poet and essayist Nikki Giovanni and children's book illustrator and 2010 Caldecott Award winner, Jerry Pinkney. The Wheatley Legacy Award is given annually for 'a body of work that transcends time, race and culture'. Past recipients include Maya Angelou, Walter Mosley, Chinua Achebe, Gordon Parks, and a host of others. Join us this night as we honor those who so ably have told our stories.
